We’re just a few days away from launching our campaign, and it’s about time you got to know the Dust crew a little better. After all, a killer idea is nothing without the awesome people behind it!

Meet Colin, our CEO and the guy who keeps everything rolling. He’s got a background in mechanical engineering, and is super passionate about outdoor recreation and motorsports. Before he kicked things off with Dust, Colin was Chief Product Officer at UBCO, where he first met the rest of the Dust team. There, he was the brains behind the product, design, and engineering, helping push the boundaries of electric utility vehicles.

Before UBCO, Colin was the Director of Hardware Engineering at Glowforge, where he levelled up their engineering game and made production run like clockwork. He’s also co-founded Trujoy, where he geeked out over automated micro-bakeries as CTO. Oh, and he’s worked with big names like Sphero, Disney, Skullcandy, and MillenWorks. Safe to say, Colin knows how to get stuff done!

Here’s a short note from Colin explaining why he started Dust:

“While working at UBCO as their Chief Product Officer, my job was to develop the product strategy for our electric vehicle portfolio.. The thing that struck me most was that no matter what background you came from, electric motorcycles were simply joy machines. The innate feeling of freedom and flow that you get from twisting a throttle was not diminished by being electric, in fact it was enhanced in some interesting ways. I can't even count the number of times I got experienced riders from gas-bikes on an electric moto and had them walk away shocked at how much they enjoyed it. This realisation highlighted a gap in the market for a bike that could wow existing petrolheads while also bringing new riders into the sport.  I had this vision of the fun and playfulness of a 125cc bike, the more approachable power delivery of a 250, and the ease of ownership of electric.

Initially I tried to develop it with UBCO but it wasn’t aligned with their plans, so we mutually agreed I could leave to spin out Dust. What’s great about this is that a lot of the planning, thinking and concept designing was done before the company started, so we really hit the ground running. I’m excited about what we’re building.

I want us to be seen as the brand that brings dirt bikes to popular culture. Desirable, affordable to most, powerful, and a brand that synonymous with quality US manufacturing.”

Colin then pulled off a coup by bringing Neil on board with him from UBCO.

Neil has an incredibly impressive resumé, with a strong track record of building successful businesses in tech, sustainability, and energy. Recognized early on as the UK Shell LiveWIRE Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004, Neil went on to found ONZO, a home energy management company now used in half of UK homes, which was later acquired by SSE. He also helped launch the eco-friendly shoe brand Allbirds, which raised $13 million in early funding and later hit a $4 billion IPO on NASDAQ. Along the way, he’s helped launch innovative projects like electric vehicles at UBCO, hydrogen refuelling at NanoSUN, and e-scooters at Pure Electric.

Beyond startups, Neil has played a key role in marketing and consulting, founding The Future Customer, which was bought by ICF, where he became a senior leader in their global marketing agency. Neil is also a Fellow at the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, working on low-carbon innovations around the world.

Colin and Neil then reached out to Jarett, who they had also met through UBCO.

Jarett, our Head of Product & Brand. With a general design background, and trained in industrial design and graphic design, Jarett has a proven track record of delivering for the likes of Hydro Flask, Belkin, and Specialized, and at UBCO, of course. He helped us create a bike that looks great and performs incredibly. He has also developed a visual identity that resonates with our community and that is positioned to be a recognised brand outside of hardcore moto enthusiasts.

Then finally they brought on Java and Mitchell to round off the team:

  • Java: Java is a marketing guru and manages all of our external comms. He’s told stories and written strategy for brands like Nike, Stance, and Salomon, but he’s also worked on many smaller projects that required getting his hands dirty.  As a creative, producer, strategist, photographer, and filmmaker, he thinks outside the box, relying on creativity to solve the most complex problems he faces. There’s a magic little sweet spot somewhere between playfulness and sophistication, and this is where Java is best deployed. He also brings technology to our user experience, introducing our ai-driven chat bot to the website, and with plans to extend this into our future buying experience online.
  • Mitchell: With 10 years of experience in the outdoor recreation industry, Mitchell went back to school for Product Management and joined the team as an intern. Now our Associate Product Manager, he specialises in identifying customer needs and is responsible for our community engagement, which is core to our brand and marketing strategy. His passion lies with the customer and maximizing their experience with Dust.

And of course beyond that we’re super lucky to have our Founder 50 and First 100 communities, along with early investors who believed in us from the very start.

We’ve put together a team that’s small but powerful, and proven in our ability to deliver. We hope you can become part of our crew and join us on our journey.
